I’ll pay for the postage. Looking for something midsized; think: iPad Mini. Just WiFi. I want to use it for Torque Pro in the vanola.

Do Kindle Fire’s run on Android? I honestly have no idea, but I have one that I haven’t turned on in like three years. I would happ ily trade it for ratchets.

Sort of. Amazon’s OS is built on Android (an outdated version) . By default it can only run things from Amazon, but you can turn on side loading, and then not entirely legally, side-load the Google Apps as well. Most Android apps run on it at that point.

Hmm, I’d send you my Nook Color (which was hacked to run some version of Android), but I have zero idea where it is these days. It’s probably old and slow enough you wouldn’t want it anyway.

The 8" tablet isn’t exactly “mid-sized” anymore, even the smallest ones out there are 10". You might come across the occasional 8" in a bargain bin but it’ll probably have a garbage low-end Snapdragon or Mediatek in it.
With that being said I’d kill for an 8" Windows tablet to replace my way too old Asus VivoTab.

Is it a question of legality? Or is it simply not encouraged?

You are welcome to have the ratchets if you can use them. Do you mind covering the $8 for postage?

You could always make one with a rasp berry pi and screen

Nevermind, while you can install android on a rasp berry pi, the touch screens do not work when using that software.

There is plenty of information out there about putting Android on Fires. I've intending to install it on one of our extra Fires but never find the motivation.

Would have been beyond my paygrade anyhow. But sounds like fun!

Is that what they call “rooting?” Have you ever done it?

It’s a copyright violation.

Kindle Fires run a heavily modified version of Android that doesn’t allow you to access the Play S tore. You can manually install an app if you download an APK file but then you have to reinstall it whenever a new app version is launched

I don’t need them, but they’re definitely better than the ratchets I have in my road box (I keep a sepa rate set of grab and go tools for trips/rallycross/gambling/junk- yarding). I’m certainly willing to cove r postage, but if you want to hang onto them and see if somebody else has a better tablet to trade, that’s cool by me.

Rats. I'd I hadn't given my galaxy tab away recently I would have been 100% onboard

Those don’t look like rackets. They look more like rat chets!

Bummer. I have a Nook HD at home that maybe I’ll try and root if the battery hasn’t failed. I won’t use it for anything else ever except Torque Pro. I have a 1st-gen iPad, but big and heavy. The Nook is much lighter.

Why is that a copyrights violation? I’m not trying to fight you on this or anything, but I am very curious, haha.

Android is free and open source, but the Google Play Store, the associated framework, and other G oogle apps are not. They are licensed by Google, and while generally free, come with strings attached. Since you have no license, installing them without Google’s permission is a violation. Google doesn’t care much about random people doing it, but they are very concerned about Chinese phone builders using their stuff without meeting their terms.
Of course some Android apps can be sideloaded on Kindles without the Google stuff, but many require it.

Yes, that is what it is called and no I’ve never done it. It seems easy enough.
